[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunwoo Lee] Amid the paralysis of the healthcare system due to the resurgence of COVID-19, an earthquake has occurred in India. A magnitude 6.0 earthquake and aftershocks struck the northeastern state of Assam, causing partial damage to buildings. No casualties have been reported so far.
According to local Indian media such as the Hindustan Times on the 28th (local time), at around 7:51 a.m., a magnitude 6.0 earthquake and aftershocks occurred 9 km northwest of Deki?juli, a small town in Assam in northeastern India. The Indian National Seismological Center reported the earthquake's magnitude as 6.4 and stated that two aftershocks followed.
The tremors were also felt in other parts of northeastern India, including West Bengal, and photos of damage such as cracked houses and collapsed walls were posted on social media platforms like Twitter. Residents startled by the shaking reportedly rushed outside their homes. Fortunately, Indian authorities have confirmed that no casualties have been reported so far, according to the Hindustan Times.
