Myanmar Citizens Shot Dead Even on ASEAN 'Cease Violence' Agreement Day
[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Hyowon] On the 24th, when the 10 member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) agreed to a "cessation of violence" in Myanmar, it was reported that bloodshed still occurred in Myanmar.
According to local media Myanmar Now on the 25th, a young man was shot dead by military police in Chanmyaytazi village in the central Mandalay region the previous day. When the military police conducted inspections targeting motorcycle drivers, a young man set fire to a tire on the road to distract the military police, who then opened fire.
In the nearby Maha Aungmyae village, during the dispersal of anti-military protesters, the military police fired shots, injuring a 20-year-old young man in the back and chest, and five people were arrested. The arrested citizens reported being brutally beaten on the spot with rifle butts.
There were also casualties in the capital Naypyidaw. It is reported that the military police captured and then shot a 50-year-old citizen during the suppression of protests there.
In response, the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP), a Myanmar human rights organization, issued a statement criticizing the military. According to AAPP, since the military coup, 748 people have died and 3,389 have been detained due to the military police's violent crackdown.
