Damyang-gun Completes Dredging of Reservoirs to Secure Agricultural Water Supply
Concerns Over Reservoir Capacity Shortage Due to Last Year's Heavy Rain Damage, 300 Million Won Spent on Emergency Dredging of 32 County Reservoirs
[Damyang=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] Jeonnam Damyang-gun announced on the 21st that it has completed dredging of 32 reservoirs managed by the county to secure stable water supply as the full-scale farming season begins.
County Governor Choi Hyungsik gave a special directive to allocate 300 million won for dredging projects last August due to concerns about insufficient reservoir capacity and blocked sluice gates caused by sediment inflow from heavy rains, and implemented emergency dredging projects on 32 reservoirs managed by the county.
Additionally, since the sediment volume was large and there were concerns about farming disruptions despite the emergency dredging, an additional 600 million won from the county’s contingency fund was urgently invested to complete dredging of 150,000㎥ of sediment, aiming to alleviate water shortage concerns during the farming season.
Currently, the county supplies water through a total of 117 reservoirs, including 70 managed by the county and 47 managed by the Korea Rural Community Corporation Damyang branch, maintaining a current reservoir rate of 73.7% (74,713 tons), securing a similar water volume to last year’s reservoir rate of 73%.
