Jeong Eui-yong Meets with U.S. Climate Envoy Kerry to Discuss Climate Change Cooperation
[Asia Economy Reporter Minji Lee] Foreign Minister Chung Eui-yong met with John Kerry, the U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, who visited Korea via China.
On the afternoon of the 17th, Minister Chung held a dinner meeting with Special Envoy Kerry at the minister's residence in Hannam-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul, where they discussed cooperation measures to address climate change. Special Envoy Kerry arrived in Korea that afternoon after meeting with Xie Zhenhua, China's Special Representative for Climate Change, in Shanghai on the 16th and 17th to discuss climate cooperation plans.
Both sides are also believed to have exchanged views on cooperation related to the climate summit hosted by U.S. President Joe Biden on the 22nd and 23rd. President Biden invited leaders from 40 countries to participate in the virtual climate summit, and President Moon Jae-in will also attend.
The government is actively pursuing cooperation with the U.S., considering that climate change response is a key agenda for President Biden and a field with great potential for Korea-U.S. collaboration. Minister Chung spoke twice with Special Envoy Kerry last month alone and agreed to strengthen cooperation to achieve the carbon neutrality goals pursued by both countries.
