Lotte Confectionery Replaces Plastic Cushioning in Custard Packaging with Paper
[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] Lotte Confectionery announced on the 15th that it will completely replace the plastic cushioning materials used in Custard with paper materials.
Lotte Confectionery plans to fully stop the production of plastic cushioning materials used in large-sized Custard products before September this year and replace them all with paper cushioning materials. Through this, it is expected to reduce more than 350 tons of plastic annually.
In addition, Lotte Confectionery is closely reviewing plans to change the cushioning materials used in Mom’s Hand Pie and the plastic cups used in Kancho and cereal cup products to paper, and plans to promote this within the year.
Meanwhile, as part of its eco-friendly management, Lotte Confectionery is carrying out various packaging improvement efforts to reduce the use of representative environmental pollutants used in snack packaging such as organic solvents, inks, and plastics.
Since last year, Lotte Confectionery has been using eco-friendly inks such as ethanol ink instead of organic solvents for Pepero, Mon Cher, Vegetable Cracker, LotSan, ABC Choco Cookie, Mok Candy, Anytime, Choco Pie, and Harvest, while reducing the number of printing passes and simplifying packaging designs. For 10 types of gum including Juicy Fresh, the printing ink density on gum paper was reduced by about half to decrease ink usage.
In September last year, the company also applied the ‘Green Certified Packaging’ technique, certified by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the Green Certification Office, to Margaret. This is also part of the ‘eco-friendly diet’ in that it replaces environmentally toxic substances and reduces harmfulness. The purpose is to minimize pollutants as much as possible for the environment, even if it means giving up extravagance.
Through eco-friendly packaging so far, Lotte Confectionery expects to reduce about 470 tons of organic solvents and ink usage annually, and also reduce more than 470 tons of plastic annually.
Additionally, Lotte Confectionery recently developed an eco-friendly paper packaging material called ‘Cacao Board’ using cacao by-products in collaboration with Hansol Paper, and applied it to the packaging of Ghana chocolate products. The number of products applying ‘Smart Recycle,’ one of the eco-friendly projects, has reached about 150 so far. ‘Smart Recycle’ is a packaging method improved to make recycling easier by allowing packaging to be easily torn and folded.
