Samsung Heavy Industries Develops World's First Cryogenic Power Generation System for Ships
On the 13th, key officials from Korea Gas Corporation and major classification societies are taking a commemorative photo at the completion report meeting of the re-vaporization system held at Samsung Heavy Industries Geoje Shipyard.
[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dae-yeol] Samsung Heavy Industries announced on the 14th that it has successfully developed and demonstrated the world's first next-generation regasification system, 'S-REGAS(CGR)', linked with a liquefied natural gas (LNG) cold energy power generation system.
S-REGAS(CGR) applies cold energy power generation technology that does not produce carbon dioxide to the LNG regasification system, a core technology of ultra-large liquefied natural gas floating storage regasification units (LNG-FSRU). It is environmentally friendly and has the advantage of reducing the cost of power generation.
LNG is transported in a liquid state below minus 162 degrees Celsius, and to use it as fuel, it must go through a regasification process where heat is applied to evaporate it into a gas state. Cold energy power generation recovers the thermal energy discarded into seawater during this regasification process to generate electricity.

In addition, S-REGAS(CGR) can produce 16MW of electricity on its own, which is more than 90% of the power required for LNG regasification, reducing annual carbon dioxide emissions by more than 60,000 tons. The company held a demonstration completion briefing on the 13th at the Geoje Shipyard, inviting Korea Gas Corporation and major classification society officials. Lee Dong-yeon, head of Samsung Heavy Industries’ Shipbuilding and Marine Research Institute, stated, "The shipbuilding and shipping industries are also strongly required to expand the use of renewable energy power for carbon neutrality."
