[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Jongno-gu (Mayor Kim Young-jong) will hold the ‘Jongno Hanbok Talk Concert’ on the 14th at 2:50 PM at Mugaewon, a traditional cultural space in Buam-dong (2, Changuimun-ro 5ga-gil), in celebration of the 2021 Spring Hanbok Culture Week designated by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
Under the theme ‘Hanbok, Coexisting,’ the event is designed as a serious yet enjoyable discussion aimed at the everyday normalization of traditional clothing. It will be an opportunity to discuss the authenticity and popularity of hanbok, as well as integrated directions toward making hanbok part of daily life.
Participants include Kim Young-jong, Mayor of Jongno-gu, traditional hanbok designer Director Kim Young-mi, Park Se-sang, CEO and planner of Jeonju Hanok Village Hanbok Day, and Professor Jocelyn, a designated intangible cultural asset holder and master of Gayageum Sanjo.
Additionally, actress and singer Jeon Hyo-sung will appear to share the story of the Hanbok advertisement project at New York Times Square on last March 1st, and discuss ways to lower the entry barriers for younger generations to hanbok, aiming to achieve true ‘everyday hanbok,’ generating much anticipation.
Considering social distancing measures, an edited version of the event will be produced and released later this month on the Jongno TV YouTube channel.
Meanwhile, Jongno-gu, which leads the spread of traditional culture such as hanbok, hanok, Korean cuisine, Hangul, Korean traditional music, and dance, has been practicing hanbok wearing by operating a monthly ‘Staff Hanbok Wearing Day’ since 2013.
It also operates the ‘Gopda Hanbok Experience Center’ to provide residents with opportunities for hanbok experience and education, and has established the ‘Hanbok Revitalization Ordinance’ to create an institutional foundation for smoothly implementing related policies.
Since 2016, to promote the beauty of hanbok not only domestically but worldwide and contribute to regional economic revitalization, Jongno-gu has held an annual ‘Hanbok Festival.’ In 2018 and 2019, it also hosted ‘Proper Wearing of Our Clothes, Hanbok Discussion Meetings’ to raise public interest in hanbok.
