Gyeongnam Province to Implement Ozone Alert System Starting April 15
Strengthening Surveillance System to Prepare for High-Concentration Ozone Occurrence in Summer
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Saeyan] The Gyeongsangnam-do Health and Environment Research Institute plans to implement an ozone alert system targeting 20 zones across all cities and counties in the province from the 15th of this month to October 15.
The ozone alert system is a measure designed to encourage voluntary participation from residents to reduce air pollutants.
If the one-hour average concentration of ozone measured at the air pollution monitoring network reaches 0.12 ppm or higher, a cautionary alert is issued; at 0.30 ppm or higher, a warning is issued; and at 0.50 ppm or higher, a severe warning is issued.
During the operation period of the ozone alert system, the institute will strengthen the monitoring system through the operation of a control room and will promptly disseminate information to protect residents' health if high concentrations of ozone are observed.
When an ozone caution or warning is issued, the institute immediately provides ozone alert information through media outlets, city and county offices, and the smartphone app 'Uri Dongnae Daegi Jeongbo' (Our Neighborhood Air Information).
Residents who wish to receive text message alerts on their mobile phones can apply through the 'Air Pollution Alert SMS Application' on the Health and Environment Research Institute’s website.
Gong Namsik, head of the Air Environment Research Department, urged, "Since ozone is a gaseous substance that cannot be blocked by masks and can cause decreased lung function, when ozone caution or warning alerts are issued, children, the elderly, and those with respiratory or heart diseases should refrain from outdoor activities and take care of their health."
