View original image[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] Shim Hyun-bo and Jang Won-bin, rowers from Jinju City Hall Rowing Team in Gyeongnam, secured first place in the lightweight double sculls category at the Korea Rowing Association’s national team selection trials, earning the Taeguk mark.
The Korea Rowing Association held the national team selection trials from the 1st to the 3rd at the Chungju Tangeum Lake Rowing Training Center, selecting 6 out of 16 national team athletes to finalize the roster for the Tokyo Olympic regional qualifiers.
Shim Hyun-bo, who joined the Jinju City Hall Rowing Team after graduating high school in 2016, has been honing his skills, while Jang Won-bin joined the team last year and has been training since.
Both athletes joined the national team last year and are preparing to leap forward as world-class rowers. The selection of the Olympic team once again recognizes the coaching skills of Jinju City Hall Rowing Team’s head coach Kang Ki-bae and coach Oh Soo-jung.
Mayor Cho Gyu-il said, “I am grateful for raising the status of Jinju rowing through this Olympic team selection, and we will cheer for their success on the world stage together with the citizens of Jinju.”
Head coach Kang Ki-bae stated, “This achievement is thanks to the athletes’ dedication through tough training, and I am thankful to Jinju City for providing an environment where they can focus solely on training.”
Meanwhile, the Tokyo Olympic Asia & Oceania rowing regional qualifiers are scheduled to be held in Tokyo, Japan, from May 5th to 7th. Jinju City Hall rowers Shim Hyun-bo and Jang Won-bin will fiercely row through the waters in Tokyo, competing for a ticket to the 32nd Tokyo Olympic Games main event.
