South Korea, US, Japan "Trilateral Cooperation for North Korea Denuclearization... International Community Must Implement UN Security Council Resolutions" (Comprehensive)
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] The national security advisors of South Korea, the United States, and Japan reaffirmed their commitment to joint responses through trilateral cooperation on North Korea's denuclearization on the 2nd (local time). They also agreed on the necessity of implementing UN Security Council resolutions by the international community, including North Korea.
Seo Hun, Director of the National Security Office at the Blue House, Jake Sullivan, U.S. National Security Advisor, and Shigeru Kitamura, Director of Japan's National Security Secretariat, held an in-person meeting at the U.S. Naval Academy near Washington DC on the same day. Following the meeting, the White House released a trilateral security advisors' press statement outlining these points.
The three national security advisors stated in the statement, "We met to consult on the U.S. policy review toward North Korea and to discuss shared concerns including Indo-Pacific security," adding, "We reaffirmed our firm commitment to cooperate in protecting and advancing our common security objectives."
They also said, "We shared concerns regarding North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programs," and "We reaffirmed our commitment to address and resolve these issues through trilateral cooperation toward denuclearization," as stated in the press release. They agreed on the necessity of full implementation of UN Security Council resolutions by the international community, including North Korea, to prevent nuclear proliferation, strengthen deterrence on the Korean Peninsula, and maintain peace and stability.
The three national security advisors also discussed the importance of the reunion of separated families in Korea and the swift resolution of the issue of Japanese abductees. They further discussed the COVID-19 pandemic, future pandemic prevention, and the immediate restoration of democracy in Myanmar, stating, "We agreed to strengthen our bonds and advance a shared vision based on common democratic values."
