Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju Establishes 'Smart Farm' to Support Independent Living for People with Developmental Disabilities
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Gwan-woo] Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City is set to actively promote a project that improves the quality of life for people with developmental disabilities and their families through public interest jobs.
On the 2nd, Gwangsan-gu announced that it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Korea Disabled Enterprise Comprehensive Support Center, under the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, to establish and operate a specialized workplace for people with developmental disabilities.
The signing ceremony was attended by Kim Sam-ho, Mayor of Gwangsan-gu, Seo Ki-young, Chairman of the Disabled Enterprise Comprehensive Support Center, and officials from both organizations.
The two organizations plan to build and operate a smart farm in Hanam-dong that uses information and communication technology (ICT) to organically cultivate leafy vegetables such as lettuce through hydroponics.
Gwangsan-gu was selected in the Ministry of SMEs and Startups' regional contest for establishing specialized workplaces to support family startups of people with developmental disabilities, securing 4.4 billion KRW in funding.
The project budget, consisting of 2.9 billion KRW in national funds and 1.5 billion KRW in city funds, will be invested over 10 years for space construction and operation.
The smart farm will be built on the site of the former Hanam Rural Guidance Office in Hanam-dong, Gwangsan-gu, featuring a three-story production facility, cold storage, training rooms, counseling rooms, and a community center, with completion targeted for October.
Gwangsan-gu will provide the site and operational support for the smart farm, while the Disabled Enterprise Comprehensive Support Center will offer business and support programs.
