Seoul City Inspects and Improves Accessibility Facilities for Disabled at By-election Polling Stations
Persons with disabilities directly visit planned polling station sites to check ramps, entrance effective widths, etc.
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] On the 5th, Seoul City announced that it conducted a survey and preliminary inspection of convenience facilities for the disabled at planned polling station locations to ensure voting rights for people with disabilities ahead of the Seoul mayoral by-election on the 7th.
Seoul City began inspections of planned polling station locations from February 22 to ensure that people with disabilities can exercise their precious vote without difficulty, and has completed inspections of convenience facilities for the disabled at 2,125 polling stations (including 396 early voting stations).
A total of 195 monitoring personnel for convenience facilities for the disabled, composed of people with disabilities themselves, visited the planned polling station locations in pairs to conduct on-site inspections from the perspective of the disabled and wrote detailed improvement suggestions regarding inconveniences.
The survey covered the convenience of polling station locations and access routes, appropriateness of the main entrance width, installation of parking spaces exclusively for the disabled, installation of disabled restrooms, installation of tactile blocks at main entrances, and whether wheelchair users can vote. The focus was on confirming whether people with disabilities can safely access polling stations and conveniently participate in voting.
Seoul City delivered the inspection results and improvement suggestions analyzed from the perspective of the disabled to the election management committees of each autonomous district and requested that the improvement suggestions be reflected when installing polling stations to actively guarantee voting rights for people with disabilities.
