Naju City Holds the 2nd Meeting of the Mahan History Committee
[Naju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yuk-bong] Jeollanam-do Naju City (Mayor Kang In-gyu) announced on the 1st that it held the 2nd meeting of the Mahan History Committee of the Public-Private Joint Committee on Leading Policy Tasks in the main conference room of the city hall.
The Mahan history restoration policy task aims to systematically and comprehensively investigate and research the ancient Mahan historical and cultural assets in the Yeongsan River basin, which have been neglected compared to the Silla, Baekje, and Gaya cultural zones, and to foster them as a new growth engine for Honam, including Naju.
The city plans to focus its efforts on discovering detailed tasks to secure the historical value, justification, and systematization of Mahan history restoration in line with the enforcement of the "Special Act on the Maintenance of Historical and Cultural Areas" on June 10.
In addition, through the establishment of a cooperative system with the Yeongsan River Basin Administrative Council and 11 local governments corresponding to the Mahan historical and cultural zone, the city intends to reflect Mahan history restoration as a national agenda in the next administration to secure momentum for promotion.
The meeting was attended by Mayor Kang In-gyu, the standing chairman of the Public-Private Joint Committee, Im Young-jin, director of the Mahan Research Institute and co-chairman of the Mahan History Committee, Park Joong-hwan, curator of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and Lee Sung-joo, dean of the College of Humanities at Kyungpook National University.
New members appointed included Do Young-jun, honorary professor at Honam University, Lee Gye-han, professor of Forest Resources at Chonnam National University, Shin Dong-hoon and Kim Man-ho, research fellows at the Gwangju-Jeonnam Research Institute, and Kim Ui-sook, deputy director of the International Exchange Department at the Korea Arts & Culture Education Service, totaling nine new members.
The Mahan History Committee reviewed the progress and future plans of 13 tasks discovered to adopt the restoration of Mahan history and designation of a historical and cultural city as national agenda items.
They also discussed the construction of the "National Mahan Historical and Cultural Zone Center (tentative name)," a core base facility to promote research and investigation of the Mahan historical and cultural zone under the Historical and Cultural Area Maintenance Act, and plans for designating a historical and cultural city linking Naju Eupseong (Geumnam-dong) and Mahan Guk-eup (Bannam and Dasim-myeon).
The city is currently promoting five tasks including the "Naju Mahan Historical and Cultural Survey and Maintenance Plan," "Designation of Mahan Cultural Sites as National Historic Sites," and "Detailed Survey of Mahan Sites in the Yeongsan River Basin."
The remaining seven tasks, such as the "Basic Plan and Feasibility Study for the Construction of the Mahan Historical and Cultural Center (tentative name)," will be promoted annually through future budget procurement.
In particular, the city will make thorough preparations to ensure that Naju City's Mahan history restoration and maintenance plan is reflected in the five-year basic plan for historical and cultural area maintenance established by the Cultural Heritage Administration, securing policy feasibility and effectiveness.
