L&K Bio Successfully Performs First Surgery with Height-Expandable Spinal Implant in Malaysia
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyungsoo Park] L&K Bio, a developer of spinal implants, announced on the 31st that it has successfully completed the first surgery in Malaysia using the posterior insertion height-expandable interbody fusion device ‘AccelFix-XT Cage’.
This is the first case conducted in the Asia region. The surgical team consisted of Dr. Lau Choon Ping from the Malaysian spine-specialized medical institution ‘Sunway Medical Centre’ and another local spine specialist who requested anonymity.
An L&K Bio official stated, “Malaysia is a country with strict movement controls even within the Asia-Pacific region,” adding, “Since medical tourism accounted for a large portion, the entire industry suffered a significant impact.”
He continued, “The L&K Malaysia team entered an emergency operation mode and has been making steady efforts through strategic resource utilization and sales activities.” He also explained, “We focused on product training and targeted customers who prefer new products, working to build confidence through simulations addressing customer concerns.”
The local team encouraged a natural transition from existing Peek (synthetic plastic) products to height-expandable products among local doctors who prefer TLIF and PLIF (posterior and posterolateral insertion height-expandable interbody fusion devices) through continuous and detailed explanations and education.
L&K Biomed expects that, based on the successful surgical experience with the XT product in Malaysia, expansion to various countries in the Asia region will be possible.

L&K Biomed is the first company in Asia to receive U.S. FDA approval for a height-expandable cage (Expandable Cage). In 2019, it completed the development of three types of height-expandable interbody fusion devices: AccelFix-XT, XL, and XTP. The XT has been quality-verified through over 700 surgeries in the U.S., and the XL (lateral insertion type Expandable Cage) through more than 70 surgical cases.
