Fire Agency Announces Revision of 'Indoor Fire Hydrant Installation Standards' to Enhance Initial Response Capability
Revised to Prevent Pump Corrosion and Ensure Unobstructed Use of Fire Hydrants
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The National Fire Agency announced on the 31st that it will promulgate a partial amendment to the "Fire Safety Standards for Indoor Fire Hydrant Equipment," which improves the installation and maintenance standards of indoor fire hydrants, on the 1st of next month.
Indoor fire hydrants are fire extinguishing equipment installed inside buildings, used by building personnel to extinguish fires in the early stages. The standards have been improved to enhance initial response capabilities.
This amendment addresses the issue that the shafts and impellers of fire pumps were made of inexpensive cast iron, which could cause corrosion. From now on, materials resistant to corrosion such as bronze and stainless steel must be used.
Additionally, since there have been cases where objects were placed in front of fire hydrant boxes or vehicles were parked, obstructing the use of fire hydrants, a legal basis has been established to ensure management without any obstacles to opening fire hydrant doors or using the hydrants.
Furthermore, when calculating the storage capacity of water tanks and the amount of water discharged from pumps, the previous standard allowed for the simultaneous use of five fire hydrants on one floor. However, considering the actual fire scene and the time before the fire brigade arrives, the standard has been changed to a capacity that allows two fire hydrants per floor to be used simultaneously.

Nam Hwa-young, Director of Fire Policy at the National Fire Agency, said, "This amendment is expected to improve the reliability of fire extinguishing equipment pumps and ensure management without obstacles to the use of fire hydrants, enabling faster initial response."
