Park Young-sun and Oh Se-hoon’s First TV Debate... Who Are the Winner and Loser? (Summary)
"Only Hostility Toward Opponent Confirmed" "Overly Enthusiastic Appearance"
Both Candidates Received Only 1 Out of 7 Votes in Competency-Related Evaluation Line
[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok, Park Jun-i] In the first TV debate between Park Young-sun of the Democratic Party and Oh Se-hoon of the People Power Party, both candidates running in the April 7 Seoul mayoral by-election, experts declared a ‘draw’ as neither side dominated the other. Political experts who watched the debate analyzed that it proceeded in a way that only consolidated the support base rather than swaying undecided voters.
On the 30th, seven political experts who watched the previous day’s MBC broadcast ‘100-Minute Debate’ gave an overall assessment of a 3-3 draw. In terms of vision, Park received 2 votes, leading Oh who received 1 vote, but in debate skills, Oh was rated better with 3 votes compared to Park’s 2 votes. Regarding capability, both candidates received only 1 vote each, indicating a poor evaluation.
The overall debate was assessed as neither candidate overwhelming the other. Jang Sung-chul, director of the Gonggam and Nonjaeng Policy Center, said, "It was a session that only confirmed hostility toward the opponent," adding, "Both showed excessive eagerness." Yoon Tae-gon, head of the De-Moa Political Analysis Office, said, "Each appealed only to their own supporters, and no one dominated the other," adding, "It seems insufficient to change the minds of those uninterested in politics or undecided voters who watched this debate."
Park was praised for presenting a vision. Park Sang-byeong, visiting professor at Inha University Graduate School of Policy, said, "Park showed a willingness to try new things, whereas Oh gave the impression of focusing on redevelopment and reconstruction." Eom Kyung-young, director of the Era Spirit Research Institute, also evaluated, "Park showed a future-oriented image, while Oh was negligent in presenting a vision."

"Oh gained confidence compared to declaration" Oh better in debate skills
Oh received relatively favorable reviews for debate skills. Ahn Il-won, CEO of ResearchView, said, "Interruptions that break the opponent’s rhythm may be annoying to viewers, but from the perspective of the leading side, it can be seen as a good defense," pointing out, "Park showed signs of nervousness, exceeding time from the opening remarks." Lee Jong-hoon, political commentator, said, "Oh’s attitude has changed a lot compared to when he declared his candidacy," giving the impression of "gaining a lot of confidence."
There was also an impression that the roles of the ruling and opposition candidates were reversed. Park Sang-chul, dean of the Graduate School of Political Studies at Kyonggi University, said, "Usually, the opposition is the attacker and the ruling party defends, but this debate was the opposite." Park said, "Park found Oh’s attack points well," but also noted, "Oh showed confidence in his administrative ability."
However, there were criticisms that concrete discussions were not properly conducted throughout the debate. Professor Park Sang-byeong said, "For pledges like vertical gardens, some estimated figures should be presented so citizens can grasp what it entails," adding, "There is a need to supplement concreteness." Professor Park Sang-chul also said, "The policies felt abstract and unconvincing," pointing out, "Due to the nature of the by-election, it seems they prepared suddenly and did not study well." Director Jang Sung-chul said, "Watching the population of Berlin debate without knowing each other was uncomfortable throughout." Park had criticized Oh’s basic income issue by mentioning the population difference between Berlin and Seoul. However, neither Park, who made the criticism, nor Oh, who proposed basic income inspired by Berlin, disclosed Berlin’s population of about 3.5 million.
Commentator Lee Jong-hoon criticized Park, saying, "If you make a pledge, you should know the details precisely, but when attacked by the opponent, instead of explaining why, they divert the topic," pointing out, "Preparation is insufficient." On the other hand, Director Eom Kyung-young said, "Oh should use more direct speech," adding, "Statements like ‘we must be humble before memory’ are clever evasions of the situation."

Meanwhile, there was also criticism that Jeong Jun-hee, adjunct professor at Hanyang University who moderated the debate, did not show fairness. Director Jang Sung-chul said, "During the broadcast, Professor Jeong twice pointed out that Oh used more panels than pre-agreed, while advising Park regarding the lead in the debate," expressing, "It raised doubts about fairness."
