Subway Line 5 Gangil Station Opening on March 27
Opening of Gangil Station on Line 5 on the 27th: Convenient Subway Access in Gangildong... Active Promotion of Direct Transfer and Express Service at Shin-Gangil Station (Tentative Name) with Additional Extension of Line 9
[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Gangdong-gu (District Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon) announced that Gangil Station, part of the extension of Subway Line 5 (Hanam Line), will open on March 27.
The Subway Line 5 extension (Hanam Line) construction starts from Sangil-dong Station and extends through Gangil Station to Hanam Sisa, Hanam Pungsan, Hanam City Hall, and Hanam Geomdansan Station, covering a total distance of 7.7 km with five new stations. Construction began in March 2015, and the first phase (Sangil-dong Station to Hanam Pungsan Station, 4.8 km) was opened last August. On the 27th, the second phase will be fully opened.
Gangil Station is located directly beneath the Metropolitan Area 1st Ring Expressway, a challenging construction zone. To ensure safety, additional structures and precise construction were implemented, which meant that even after the first phase opening, trains passed through without stopping, causing disappointment. However, with the full opening of the entire section, Gangil Station will now be accessible, improving public transportation access for residents around Gangil-dong and Godeok Gangil 3 District, who previously experienced inconvenience using the subway.
The first train at Gangil Station on weekdays, heading towards the city center (upbound), departs at 5:40 AM. Train intervals during rush hours will be between 7 to 14 minutes (averaging 10 minutes). From Gangil Station, it takes 11 minutes to reach Gangdong Station and 13 minutes to Cheonho Station. Transferring to Line 8 at Cheonho Station allows access to Jamsil Station within 20 minutes.
The district office stated that to facilitate transfers for residents using Gangil Station, additional bus stops will be established near the station exits. They are actively negotiating with Seoul City to create new bus routes passing through Godeok Gangil 3 District, Gangil District, and Gangil Station.
Additionally, the current 1:1 operation ratio between the Hanam Geomdansan section and the Macheon section will be adjusted proportionally based on actual demand. On-site surveys and usage status will be closely examined, and continuous recommendations will be made to relevant agencies.
Furthermore, the district is requesting related agencies, including the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, to designate the new Gangil Station (tentative name) as an express station and to enable direct transfer on the 'Seoul Gangdong-Hanam-Namyangju Urban Railway Construction' line, which includes the 4th phase extension of Line 9 (Godeok Gangil 1 District to Gangil-dong, 1.25 km). They will actively strive to ensure that the new Gangil Station, a key section, is designated as an express station.
