Author Sim Yong-hwan's Special Lecture on 'The History of the Korean Peninsula Embraced by Yongsan' and More
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yongsan-gu (District Mayor Seong Jang-hyun) is recruiting students for lifelong learning courses including a special history lecture by writer Shim Yong-hwan.
The special lectures will be held in the following order, each lasting two hours from 7 to 9 p.m.: "The History of the Korean Peninsula Embraced by Yongsan" (April 19), "Kim Gu and Modern Korean History" (April 21), "The Korean War and Contemporary Korean History" (April 26), and "East Asian History through Treaties" (April 28).
Writer Shim Yong-hwan is well known to the public through books such as "1 Page Korean History 365," "History Talk," "The Imagination of the Constitution," "Korean History at a Glance," "History Wars," and "We Did Not Punish Anyone."
He currently serves as the director of the History N Education Research Institute, a visiting professor at Sungkonghoe University, and a host of MBC's "Tabak Tabak World History." He has also appeared on KBS's "History Journal That Day," JTBC's "As You Say," and tvN's "Accidental Adult."
Interested residents can apply through the district's comprehensive education portal from March 25 to April 9. The class size is limited to 30, with priority given to youth (teenagers) and new students.
The classes will be conducted online (non-face-to-face), and participants must prepare a PC or smartphone capable of running the video conferencing program Zoom. The courses are free of charge.
A district official said, "We will look back on the history of Seoul, the Korean Peninsula, and East Asia centered on Yongsan," adding, "You will be able to confirm Yongsan's autonomous status in modern and contemporary Korean history."
The district is also recruiting students for the second term of the "Mutual School."

Instructors are Yongsan-gu residents active in their respective professional fields. Each course enrolls about 10 students, and schedules vary. Applications can be made through the district's comprehensive education portal.

Seong Jang-hyun, Mayor of Yongsan-gu, said, "We have prepared many unique courses to welcome the new spring," and added, "We ask for your understanding as classes continue to be held online due to COVID-19."
