Jang Yeon-ju, Gwangju City Council Member, "An Adoption Culture Without Prejudice Must Be Established..."
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Jang Yeon-ju, a member of the Gwangju Metropolitan Council (Justice Party, proportional representation), held a policy forum on the 23rd in collaboration with the Korea Adoption Promotion Association titled "Seeking Policy Measures for a Prejudice-Free Society and the Proper Activation of Adoption."
At the forum, Professor Lee Yong-gyo (Department of Social Welfare, Gwangju University) presented on the topic "The History, Current Status, and Challenges of Adoption," and So Seong-sook, head of the Gwangju-Jeonnam branch of the Korea Adoption Promotion Association, proposed the enactment of an anti-prejudice adoption education ordinance to provide quantitative and qualitative support for improving current adoption education.
Additionally, various opinions from attendees followed, including understanding the developmental psychology of adopted children, counseling cases of families in crisis and the necessity of self-help groups for adoptees, parenting and promotion related to adopted children, and providing adoption services to find warm homes for adopted children.
Furthermore, Gwangju Metropolitan City’s Director of Women and Family Affairs, Kwak Hyun-mi, and Kim Jae-hwang, Superintendent of the City Education Office, introduced Gwangju’s adoption facilities and family support projects, discussed the management of post-adoption child care programs, the current status of anti-prejudice adoption education implementation, and the future roles of administrative and educational institutions in enhancing human rights sensitivity at the forum.

Council member Jang Yeon-ju stated, “Although bloodline preference is still deeply rooted in our society, we must all strive in education to expand adoption and shift social awareness,” adding, “We will do our best to ensure that a ‘proper adoption culture’ is established as soon as possible through administrative and institutional support.”
