[Asia Economy Reporter Junhyung Lee] Lee Seokhong, Vice President of Sampyo Industry and a leading authority in concrete engineering, identified Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC) as a promising construction technology that can reduce carbon emissions.
Vice President Lee expressed this opinion during his keynote speech at the '2021 K-New Deal Summit Conference' held on the 19th at KINTEX in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province. He stated, "UHPC is a core material for Off-Site Construction (OSC), producing less noise and dust during construction and reducing carbon emissions," adding, "It is also gaining attention as a next-generation eco-friendly construction technology from an ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management perspective."
UHPC has up to 10 times the strength of ordinary concrete. Its high flexibility allows for minimal use of rebar and reduces the concrete cross-section, which in turn lowers carbon emissions, according to Vice President Lee. According to Sampyo Industry, cement is the main ingredient of concrete, and 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions come from the cement manufacturing process.
UHPC is also expected to contribute to the digitalization of construction sites. Vice President Lee explained, "UHPC enhances the added value of architectural structures when combined with digital technologies such as 3D printing," and added, "Recently, 3D printing technology that sprays and layers UHPC has been introduced on-site, virtually removing restrictions on the shapes of structures."
By mixing pigments with UHPC, various colors can be produced. According to Vice President Lee, UHPC is used in interiors as it can create not only the natural texture of concrete but also various atmospheres. Interior and exterior materials such as wall panels and flooring made primarily from UHPC have been developed.
