[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] The Northern Gyeonggi Provincial Police Agency is expanding the 'Safe Speed 5030' policy, which lowers vehicle speed limits by more than 10 km/h in urban areas, to the outskirts of cities.
According to the Northern Gyeonggi Provincial Police Agency on the 21st, reducing vehicle speed by 5% decreases injury accidents by 10%, fatal accidents by 20%, and the probability of pedestrian fatalities per 10 pedestrians is 9 at 60 km/h, 5 at 50 km/h, and 1 at 30 km/h.
Additionally, the urban area implementing 'Safe Speed 5030' accounts for less than 5% of the total area of Northern Gyeonggi, and as of last year, the number of traffic fatalities in urban areas decreased by 13 (17.8%) compared to the previous year, but outside urban areas, it increased by 11 (11.3%).
In particular, the Northern Gyeonggi region has a wide distribution of mountains and many rural villages and military bases adjacent to roads formed along valleys, rivers, and streams, making it an area with frequent movement of military vehicles such as tanks.
Accordingly, the police plan to prioritize and expand the application of 'Safe Speed 5030' to roads where the speed limit is excessively high or there is a large speed difference on the same route, winding and steep mountain or riverside roads, rural village roads with poor pedestrian conditions outside urban areas, and roads with high accident risk due to intersections or crosswalks.
Along with this, to prevent speeding and jaywalking, the police will increase facilities such as unmanned traffic enforcement equipment and pedestrian-vehicle separation fences, and expand the use of 'undercover patrol cars' to general roads.
The police will have an advisory period until the end of March and will focus on cracking down on speeding and signal violations starting in April.
