Son Won-je, Hankyoreh Editorial Writer, Resigns from Prosecutor General Recommendation Committee
[Asia Economy Reporter Bae Kyunghwan] Son Wonje, a non-ex officio member of the Prosecutor General Candidate Recommendation Committee (Candidate Recommendation Committee) for the successor to former Prosecutor General Yoon Seokyeol, has expressed his intention to resign. The Ministry of Justice has begun procedures to appoint a new member.
On the 15th, the Ministry of Justice stated, "We have officially confirmed Son's resignation as a candidate recommendation committee member," and "We plan to proceed with the process of appointing a new member."
According to the Prosecutors' Office Act, the Candidate Recommendation Committee consists of a total of nine members, including one chairman. Earlier, on the 11th, the Ministry of Justice appointed four non-ex officio members to the committee: Son Wonje, former Minister of Justice Park Sanggi (chairman), former Chonnam National University professor Ahn Jin, and former Deputy Minister of Justice Gil Taegi. The five ex officio members are Kim Hyungdu, Deputy Director of the Court Administration Office; Lee Jongyeop, President of the Korean Bar Association; Han Kijeong, Chairman of the Council of Law Schools; Jeong Younghwan, President of the Korean Law Professors Association; and Lee Jeongsu, Director of the Prosecutor's Office at the Ministry of Justice.
Son, a current journalist, is known to have felt burdened by participating in the selection of the prosecutor general successor amid intense political and social conflicts. Accordingly, the Ministry of Justice has begun the process of appointing a non-ex officio member to replace Son. However, no special procedures are required for appointing a non-ex officio member.
