Yeosu City to Develop Samdong District as Future New Growth Industry R&D Complex
Investment of 87.6 Billion KRW in Attracting Research Institutes, Supporting R&D, and National Funding
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Yeosu City (Mayor Kwon Oh-bong) announced on the 15th that it is focusing on fostering the Samdong District as a future new growth engine industrial hub by concentrating research institutes and other facilities.
According to the city, last year it established a Future Industry Team within the Industrial Support Division and has been strengthening the competitiveness of Yeosu's industry by attracting research institutes that were previously absent in the region and providing various research and development support needed by local companies.
Starting with the relocation of the "Korea Construction Living Environment Testing Institute Honam Headquarters" in 2019, Yeosu has been establishing itself as a central research and development complex in the Yeosu-Gwangyang Bay area by securing the "Korea Chemical Research Institute Center" and the "Jeonnam Technopark Center."
The city is making every effort to attract the "Korea Testing Laboratory Center" and the "Plant Core New Equipment Technology Support Center."
Additionally, a total project cost of 87.6 billion KRW, including national funding, is being invested to support research and development for regional industry growth through projects such as establishing a CO2 high value-added commercialization platform, a petrochemical advanced demonstration platform, commercialization of biodegradable polymers, waste plastic recycling, and strengthening the commercialization base of advanced materials.

A city official stated, "We will strive to establish a foundation for urban growth and a city full of jobs by preparing growth engines for future industries through organic cooperation with local industries, universities, and research institutes to foster not only the petrochemical industry but also various new industries."
