UN Security Council Chair Statement Condemning Violent Crackdown on Myanmar Protests
Unanimous Agreement by All Member States Including China
The Word "Coup" Removed from the Draft
[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has decided to issue a statement unanimously condemning the Myanmar military's violent crackdown on protesters.
According to the Associated Press on the 10th (local time), the UNSC statement strongly condemns the use of violence against peaceful protesters, including women, youth, and children, and calls on the Myanmar military to exercise restraint.
This is the second time the Security Council has issued a statement regarding the Myanmar coup since expressing "deep concern" on the 4th of last month, and the first time it has issued a presidential statement.
However, AP reported that the content of this statement is considerably more restrained compared to the draft led by the United Kingdom. The UK-circulated draft included the word "coup" and mentioned the possibility of UN sanctions, but such references were not included in the agreed text.
