Jeonnam Province Leads in Supplying Safe and Fresh Seafood
Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Nation's First Clean Wholesale Market and Production Area Hygiene Safety System Construction
[Muan=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Yoon Jamin] Jeonnam Province is taking the lead in supplying fresh and safe seafood to its residents.
On the 10th, the province announced that it will consecutively start construction of the nation's first clean auction market and the establishment of a sanitary safety system at production sites.
The clean auction market, the first of its kind in the country, located at Nokdong Port in Goheung, is a new concept model equipped with innovative hygiene facilities for all processes of seafood handling including unloading, sorting, auctioning, and delivery.
Selected in 2019 as a project by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, construction began on the 2nd with the goal of completion within the year. It will be built with a budget of 6 billion KRW, covering a total floor area of 2,929㎡ over two above-ground floors.
The establishment of the sanitary safety system at production sites is a remodeling project of existing auction markets applying hygiene safety systems such as low-temperature auctions, automatic sorting, and fresh distribution.
Through last year's public project selection, the Beopseongpo auction market in Yeonggwang was chosen as the target site. Currently in the detailed design phase, facilities including a low-temperature auction hall and automatic sorting machines will be installed by August with a budget of 4.3 billion KRW.
Unlike existing open-type general auction markets, both facilities are closed-type. The interior of the auction halls will be hygienically managed and operated under constant low-temperature conditions.
Additionally, the auction hall and unloading areas are separated, purified seawater is used, and access is restricted to authorized personnel only, ensuring freshness maintenance and thorough hygiene management of seafood.
The province plans to continue expanding infrastructure for fresh seafood distribution and hygiene safety by securing government public projects, including building five additional clean auction markets and sanitary safety systems at production sites by 2025.
