KOICA Donates 100,000 Seedlings for Forest Restoration in Guatemala
[Asia Economy Reporter Inho Yoo] The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) announced on the 10th that it has donated 100,000 seedlings for forest restoration in Guatemala, which is severely affected by climate change.
According to this donation, the seedlings will be distributed to local farmers' cooperatives in three departments in northern and central Guatemala?Pet?n, Alta Verapaz, and Baja Verapaz?that suffered damage from typhoons and droughts last year.
The donated seedlings include mahogany, used as a premium furniture material; Grevillea, which has high moisture content and is used for water resource restoration; and cedar, which provides wide shade and helps cultivate coffee, a local specialty.

Since 2018, KOICA has invested 7 million USD (8 billion KRW) to strengthen the ecosystem resilience in this area. Including this seedling support, KOICA plans to restore 10,000 hectares of forest by 2023.
