[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] SK Hynix is launching the industry's first 18GB mobile DRAM capable of processing 10 high-definition movies in just one second.
On the 8th, SK Hynix announced that it has started mass production of the industry's largest capacity 18GB LPDDR5 mobile DRAM. 'LP' refers to DRAM used in mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet PCs, and DDR5 denotes the 5th generation product commercialized by the semiconductor industry since last year.
According to SK Hynix, the new LPDDR5 product operates at 6400Mb per second, about 20% faster than the mobile DRAM currently installed in smartphones. This speed allows processing of ten full HD (5GB) high-definition movies in just one second.
In the semiconductor industry, the maximum capacity of existing mobile DRAM was 16GB. SK Hynix increased this by 2GB. A SK Hynix official emphasized, "With a larger capacity than the existing 16GB product, the temporary data storage space is expanded, significantly improving processing speed and video quality."
This product is installed in premium 5G smartphones with the highest specifications, providing an optimal environment for playing high-resolution games and videos. SK Hynix supplies LPDDR5 DRAM to ASUS, a global IT company, for its gaming smartphone 'ROG (Republic of Gamers) 5'. It is expected that the application range of this product will continue to expand with the latest technologies such as ultra-high-performance camera applications and artificial intelligence (AI).
