[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] Xi Jinping, President of China, emphasized patriotism among medical workers, stating that significant achievements have been made in COVID-19 prevention and control during the annual major political event, the Two Sessions (Lianghui: National People's Congress and Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference).
According to the People's Daily on the 7th, President Xi expressed these views while encouraging members from the medical, health, and education sectors attending the 4th session of the 13th Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) held in Beijing the previous day.
At the meeting, President Xi said, "Last year was very difficult since the founding of the New China, with a complex international situation and the impact of COVID-19," adding, "The Central Committee of the Communist Party of China led all ethnic groups and the people nationwide to unite and achieve significant strategic results in COVID-19 prevention and control." He expressed confidence in the success of the 14th Five-Year Plan, which aims to surpass the United States, noting that China recorded positive economic growth first among major world economies and achieved victory in poverty eradication.
President Xi praised the dedication of medical staff and educators during the COVID-19 crisis, stating, "This COVID-19 situation once again demonstrated that prevention is the most economical and effective policy. Going forward, we must improve the disease prevention and control system and vigorously carry out patriotic health campaigns."
He mentioned, "Public hospitals took on the most difficult tasks and played a major role during the COVID-19 crisis, and traditional Chinese medicine and the medical insurance system were of great help," adding, "We must raise the social status of medical workers and create an environment where they can become the people's doctors."
President Xi urged teaching staff to be armed with ideology and politics and to devote themselves to education, while also stating, "Women should follow the Party's directives, feel a sense of responsibility, and strive for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation."
