Special Support and Standards Established for Victims of the Jeju 4·3 Incident
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jun-yi] The full revision bill of the Special Act on the Investigation of the Jeju 4·3 Incident and the Restoration of the Honor of Victims, which seeks to provide special support such as compensation to the victims of the Jeju 4·3 Incident, passed the National Assembly plenary session on the 26th.
On the same day, the National Assembly held a plenary session and passed the full revision bill of the Special Act on the Investigation of the Jeju 4·3 Incident and the Restoration of the Honor of Victims with 199 votes in favor, 5 against, and 25 abstentions out of 229 members present.
The revision bill mandates special support such as compensation for the victims of the Jeju 4·3 Incident and establishes criteria for such support. It also includes legal provisions for restoring the honor of the victims who were killed during the 4·3 Incident. This establishes a legal basis for the state to take responsibility for violence committed by the state.
The current law, enacted in 2000, had insufficient provisions regarding follow-up measures based on the results of the investigation, limiting the healing of the pain of victims and their families. The revision bill was prepared to supplement these shortcomings.
