COP28 Yuchiwonhoe Regular General Meeting "Host Location Namhaean Namjungwon Must Be Decided First"
On the 26th at Yeosu World Expo Site... Joint Proposal Resolution
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] The 'COP28 Hosting Committee Regular General Meeting' was held at the Yeosu World Expo Hall on the 26th.
Kim Kyung-soo, Governor of Gyeongnam Province, Kim Young-rok, Governor of Jeonnam Province, Kwon Oh-bong, Mayor of Yeosu, Yoon Sang-gi, County Head of Hadong, and eight mayors and county heads from the southern coast and southern central region jointly signed a joint petition on the 26th to host COP28 in the southern coast and southern central region, reaffirming their determination for the joint hosting of COP28.
The joint petition on this day included a request to "designate the southern coast and southern central region as the hosting area for COP28 before the official announcement of South Korea's bid, considering the passion of local residents who have never let go of the bid for 13 years since the 2011 COP18 bid, which was conceded to the competing city Doha, Qatar, and from the perspective of national balanced development."
Additionally, a signing ceremony for the petition to construct the Namhae-Yeosu Undersea Tunnel was held on the same day.
COP28, which is being jointly bid by 10 cities and counties in the southern coast and southern central region, will be held in November 2023, and the host country will be decided at the 26th meeting in Glasgow, UK, this coming November.
Currently, the cities competing to host COP28 are the southern coast and southern central region (Yeosu City, Jeonnam), Incheon Metropolitan City, Goyang City in Gyeonggi Province, and Jeju Island, totaling four locations.
So far, Yeosu City and the COP28 Hosting Committee have continuously urged the government to recognize the will and justification of the southern central region and to pre-select the domestic host city before officially announcing South Korea's hosting.
The COP28 Hosting Committee stated, "We plan to deliver the government petition urging hosting by the 10 mayors and county heads of the southern coast and southern central region, discussed at this general meeting, to the Ministry of Environment."
