Classical, Gugak, and Tap Dance... Mapo Cultural Foundation Unveils '2021 Performance Lineup'
[Asia Economy Reporter Donghyun Choi] The Mapo Cultural Foundation will meet audiences this year with a total of about 100 performances, including classical festivals, gugak (traditional Korean music), and tap dance.
On the 24th, the Mapo Cultural Foundation unveiled its lineup of planned performances for 2021. Despite issues such as COVID-19 and remodeling construction, the foundation announced that under the major plans of ▲branding the Mapo M Festival ▲establishing the Mapo Art Center online ▲and reopening the Mapo Art Center, it plans to meet audiences with a total of about 100 large and small performances this year.
Marking its 6th year, the Mapo M Classic Festival will come in September with a project titled "Mapo Four Seasons." Top domestic artists will perform Vivaldi's Four Seasons in downtown Seoul.
The Gugak Festival has been revamped under the title "Korea Rhythm Touch." Performances reinterpret Arirang from various regions nationwide in a modern way, gugak fused with classical music, and madangnori (traditional Korean outdoor play) performed with rock and roll sounds will be presented four times in March, July, August, and November.
In addition, the M Starlight Tojeong Festival, featuring fortune-telling experts in saju (four pillars), physiognomy, and tarot, the M Countdown Festival closing the year with street performances by indie musicians from Hongdae, and the 3rd Tap Dance Festival will be held.
The Mapo Art Center will complete about 13 months of remodeling construction in November and transform into a complex cultural institution equipped with a large theater with a capacity of 1,000 seats. Various genre pilot performances will be held to coincide with the reopening, and since the performance hall cannot be operated immediately, communication with the audience will continue through the Cyber Art Center.
The foundation will present visually rich content by adding visual effects to the vividness of live performances and stages without spatial and temporal constraints through immersive technologies such as XR (Extended Reality). Exhibitions in cyberspace will also be held.
