Kukpyowon Launches Full-Scale Operation of '2050 Carbon Neutrality Standardization Strategy' Council
[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Joo Sang-don] A public-private collaboration system aimed at strengthening the global market competitiveness of related industries and creating new markets through carbon neutrality standardization is set to be fully launched.
The National Institute of Technology and Standards under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy will hold a kickoff meeting of the Carbon Neutrality Standardization Strategy Council on the 22nd at the EL Tower in Seoul to establish the '2050 Carbon Neutrality Standardization Strategy.'
The meeting will be attended by 14 companies and institutions, including co-chairmen Jung Yeon-in, CEO of Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, and Lee Sang-hoon, Director of the National Institute of Technology and Standards, as well as companies and research institutes from high greenhouse gas emission sectors such as POSCO and Hyundai Oilbank, and related associations.
The Standardization Strategy Council consists of a general committee and four subcommittees: ▲Energy Transition ▲New Promising Low-Carbon Industries ▲Core Industries for Low-Carbon Transition ▲Strengthening Standardization Infrastructure. The goal is to establish the '2050 Carbon Neutrality Standardization Strategy' by the end of this year, which will present implementation methods and test evaluation criteria for low-carbon technologies by industry.
At this first meeting, the trends and necessity of carbon neutrality standardization will be shared, and the establishment plan for the carbon neutrality standardization strategy will be mainly discussed. Companies in high greenhouse gas emission sectors such as POSCO (steel), Hyundai Oilbank (petrochemicals), Sampyo (cement), and Seokwang Industry (machinery and valves) agreed to identify standardization tasks related to the use of alternative fuels like green hydrogen, material recycling, production structure transformation, and process efficiency improvement.
The Korea Testing Certification (KTC), a testing and certification specialized institution, plans to propose standardization tasks for energy big data through efficiency improvement of household electrical appliances and smart meters, along with plans to build a testbed for demonstration of developed technologies. The Korea Energy Agency and the Korea Institute of Energy Technology will identify standardization tasks for materials and components related to renewable energy such as solar and wind power. The Korea Smart Grid Association plans to develop standardization tasks related to distributed power grid construction due to renewable energy grid connection, energy storage devices (secondary batteries), hydrogen and electric vehicles through feedback from member companies such as Korea Electric Power Corporation and Korea South-East Power, as well as academia including Korea University.
Jung Yeon-in, CEO of Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction and co-chairman, said, "Carbon neutrality is a different challenge from cost reduction and productivity improvement that companies have pursued so far, and I am confident that standards as guidelines can be a breakthrough before technology development." He added, "We will strive to ensure that the standardization strategy established through this council's activities leads to actual standard development."
