The ‘Carbon Neutral City Promotion Team’ is led by Deputy Mayor Kim Jong-hyo and consists of 24 members including heads of departments, experts, industry representatives, and civil society organization leaders.
At the meeting, attended by Deputy Mayor Kim Jong-hyo and others, the ‘2021 Carbon Neutral City Promotion Plan’ was discussed. This plan includes the greenhouse gas reduction targets that Gwangju must achieve this year, the inaugural year taking the first step toward carbon neutrality by 2045, sector-specific greenhouse gas reduction strategies, and evaluation methods for reduction implementation.
The main contents involve promoting 94 reduction projects across six sectors: energy transition, buildings, transportation, resource circulation, agriculture and livestock, and carbon sinks, aiming to reduce 1 million tons of greenhouse gases annually by 2045.
In particular, to achieve the goals, Gwangju plans to promote reduction projects such as expanding the supply of renewable energy, green remodeling of public buildings, increasing the distribution of eco-friendly vehicles, creating smart resource circulation villages, fostering eco-friendly urban agriculture, and planting 30 million trees, while actively discovering new projects.
Deputy Mayor Kim Jong-hyo stated, “The climate crisis is not a future problem but a disaster situation already occurring,” and added, “We will carry out various practical campaigns such as publicity, education, and campaigns to encourage citizens to voluntarily participate in reducing greenhouse gases in daily life, and will steadily promote carbon neutrality projects.”
