Additional Indictment for Torture... Myanmar Large-Scale Protests Expected
[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] The movement of citizens opposing the military coup in Myanmar is expanding. This is in stronger protest following the additional indictment of State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi.
On the 17th (local time), according to major foreign media, anti-military activists Kin Sandar urged on Facebook, "Let millions gather to overthrow the dictators."
Chit Toe, a senior official and spokesperson of the National League for Democracy (NLD) led by Suu Kyi, said, "Let's march in large numbers," adding, "Let's show our power to the coup government that destroyed the future of the nation and its youth."
Local media and foreign press reported that citizens across Myanmar, including the protest hub Yangon, are blocking the streets with their cars to prevent the entry of police and military trucks. Clergy members are reportedly protesting in front of the U.S. Embassy in Yangon and other locations.
Meanwhile, protesters held a press conference the day before and expressed skepticism about the military's announcement to "conduct new elections and transfer power to the winning party." They explained that it would be difficult to hold fair elections while democratically elected leaders such as State Counsellor Suu Kyi remain detained.
