What’s the story behind a 70-year-old senior in Bulgwang 2-dong, Eunpyeong-gu donating 100 million won?
Eunpyeong-gu Resident Mr. A Donates 100 Million Won to Eunpyeong-gu Scholarship Foundation While Organizing Some Assets... Expresses Desire to Support First University Tuition for Students Entering College This Year
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] A heartwarming act of kindness by a resident recently took place in Eunpyeong-gu, bringing the warmth of spring days.
On the 10th, a man in his 70s, Mr. A, visited the Bulgwang 2-dong Community Service Center in Eunpyeong-gu (Mayor Kim Mi-kyung). Having lived alone with difficulties, Mr. A came to the community center while organizing part of his assets, looking for a meaningful place to donate.
Despite his challenging situation, Mr. A decided to anonymously provide scholarships to students in the Eunpyeong area who do not give up on their studies.
In particular, he expressed his wish to support the first university tuition fees for students entering college this year.
Accordingly, the community chief and the responsible officer accompanied Mr. A to the bank and helped him deposit 100 million won to the Eunpyeong Residents Scholarship Foundation. In addition to the 100 million won donation, Mr. A also donated 2 million won in cash from his bank account balance to the Warm Winter Project.
The Eunpyeong Residents Scholarship Foundation, established in September 2007, is a scholarship foundation within the Eunpyeong area that aims to improve the local educational environment, discover outstanding talents, and provide more opportunities to students facing financial difficulties.
Meanwhile, along with Mr. A’s good deed, the warm donation culture in Eunpyeong-gu continues. Grandmother B, who lives in Sinsa 2-dong, sent a food box filled with the heart of the elderly, saying she wanted to help the elderly living alone in Eunpyeong-gu. Also, the late Kim Young-ho, the head of the Tongjang Association in Nokbeon-dong, who sadly passed away due to COVID-19, left a will asking for donations to help neighbors in need. His wife, Kwon Young-soon, donated 1 million won to support disadvantaged neighbors.

Son Shin-gi, the chief of Bulgwang 2-dong, said, “An elderly person living alone generously donated the assets he had painstakingly saved as a social contribution for scholarships for students without any hesitation,” adding, “Although everyone is going through difficult times due to COVID-19, I was deeply moved to feel that there are still many warm-hearted people in our society with open minds.”
