[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Ju-yeon] Lee Nak-yeon, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, announced that preparations will be made to implement mandatory education for 5-year-olds starting in 2025.
On the morning of the 15th, at the party's Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly, Lee said, "We will steadily prepare a new welfare system that responds to the post-COVID-19 era," adding, "As one of the concrete measures, we will promote mandatory education for 5-year-olds."

View original imageRegarding the new welfare system, Lee explained, "It aims to guarantee the minimum standards of living for the public in eight areas including income, housing, employment, childcare, medical care, and care services, and to pursue appropriate standards," noting that "this was proposed by the World Bank and the International Labour Organization."
On this day, mandatory education for 5-year-olds was presented as one of the specific measures of the new welfare system.
Lee stated, "Since 2012, the free Nuri curriculum for 5-year-olds has been implemented, but in reality, there are out-of-pocket expenses when using private kindergartens and private daycare centers," and added, "Thirty-eight countries worldwide have implemented mandatory education for 5-year-olds. We should also prepare to implement mandatory education for 5-year-olds by 2025."
