National Assembly Pushes to Investigate MB Government's NIS Surveillance Allegations
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Cheol-eung] A parliamentary-level investigation is expected to be conducted to clarify the surveillance allegations against the Lee Myung-bak administration.
On the 9th, Kim Kyung-hyup, chairman of the National Assembly Intelligence Committee from the Democratic Party of Korea, stated on SBS broadcast, "It is most desirable for the National Intelligence Service to proactively conduct an internal investigation to clarify the facts. However, if this is not properly carried out, we are also considering procedures such as resolutions by the National Assembly Intelligence Committee."
Shin Young-dae, spokesperson for the Democratic Party, said in a briefing that day, "Reports have emerged that surveillance documents exist on all members of the 18th National Assembly by the National Intelligence Service under the Lee Myung-bak administration. Shocking circumstances have also been revealed that state agencies such as the prosecution, police, and National Tax Service were fully mobilized to create these surveillance documents."
He continued, "Considering cases such as the surveillance of a lawmaker’s acquaintance who criticized former lawmaker Lee Sang-deuk, the elder brother of former President Lee Myung-bak, and an obscure obstetrics and gynecology hospital, the National Intelligence Service under the Lee Myung-bak administration reminds one of the Gestapo, the surveillance organization of Adolf Hitler, a world-renowned dictator, targeting opposition forces," he criticized.
