Proposal to Maintain Full Employment at Mapo Building for LG Twin Towers Cleaning Workers on Strike
In the Coordination Meeting, Union Side Informed
"Employment of Union Members Aged 65 and Over Will Also Be Maintained"
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] S&I Corporation, an LG Group building management affiliate, and building cleaning company Jisoo INC announced on the 9th that they proposed a plan to have all 30 cleaning workers currently protesting at the Yeouido LG Twin Towers work at the LG Mapo Building and to allow union members aged 65 and older to continue working.
S&I and Jisoo INC stated, "At the second mediation meeting held under the mediation of the Southern Branch of the Ministry of Employment and Labor, we conveyed this plan to the union side." The meeting took place amid ongoing conflicts between the two sides over future employment following the termination of the cleaning service contract at the end of last year. Attendees included company representatives, representatives of the protesting cleaning workers, and officials from the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions Public Transport Workers' Union.
S&I and Jisoo INC explained, "We have maintained the position of preserving employment by allowing protesting union members to work at other business sites for their commuting convenience. However, the union side argued that 'if union members work scattered across multiple sites, the union could be dissolved, so the entire union's employment must be succeeded at the Twin Towers,' which stalled negotiations."
They added that the Twin Towers have been serviced by a new cleaning company since this year, which newly hired about 90 workers (including 30 disabled workers) to perform cleaning services. Therefore, if the protesting union members were to work at the Twin Towers, the newly hired workers would have to find other jobs just about a month after starting work, according to S&I and Jisoo INC.

S&I and Jisoo INC emphasized, "If the union accepts this proposal and all union members work at the LG Mapo Building alone, concerns about 'union dissolution' will be dispelled." They also noted that the proposal includes maintaining employment for union members aged 65 and older, and if health permits, contracts will be extended annually to allow continued work.
