“Late Pastor Kang Shin-seok Who Led Democratization and the May 18 Movement”
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Jun-kyung] Jang Seok-woong, Superintendent of Education of Jeonnam, attended the funeral service of the late Pastor Kang Shin-seok, who led the democratization movement and the May 18 Democratization Movement, on the 8th to express his condolences.
On that day, Superintendent Jang Seok-woong said in the eulogy at the democratic social funeral service for the late Pastor Kang Shin-seok held at Chosun University Hospital funeral hall, “The pastor’s great life and spirit will be a solid foundation for establishing democracy, human rights, peace, and justice.”
He also said, “The noble will and spirit left by the pastor will be a guiding light to lead our children to become confident democratic citizens of future society,” and pledged, “Although the pastor’s absence will be deeply felt, we will not be discouraged and will follow that path.”
Superintendent Jang recalled, “The pastor was a light that illuminated the darkness of the era and a warm neighbor who always stood on the side of the weak. In particular, he was a living witness to the ‘May Gwangju,’ whose truth has not yet been fully revealed, and a pillar of the Gwangju spirit.”
He continued, “He left a great legacy with his extraordinary passion for educational democratization, such as leading and supporting the activities of the Korean Teachers and Education Workers Union (KTU), which was launched under the banner of true education, more than anyone else.”

The late Pastor Kang Shin-seok devoted his life to the anti-dictatorship democratization movement and revealing the truth of the May 18 Democratization Movement. He passed away on the 5th at the age of 83 and was laid to rest at the May 18 National Cemetery in Buk-gu, Gwangju on the same day.
