Daegu City Steps Up to Support 'Corona Jangbaljang'... Providing Daily Necessities to Households Facing Livelihood Crisis
Daegu Social Welfare Community Chest Donates to Install 'Kidari Jeompang' at Food Banks and Food Markets
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Dong-wook] Daegu City announced on the 8th that it will install and operate 11 locations of the 'Dalgubeol Kidari Sharing Store' for citizens struggling with their livelihoods due to COVID-19 and other reasons.
The 'Dalgubeol Kidari Sharing Store' is part of a public assistance project aimed at preventing so-called 'COVID Jean Valjean' by providing food and daily necessities to households facing livelihood crises such as unemployment, temporary closure, or business suspension caused by COVID-19.
According to Daegu City, the name 'Dalgubeol Kidari Sharing Store' was chosen to continue the spirit of sharing from the 'Kidari Ajusshi' who has quietly made anonymous donations for over 10 years for the citizens of Daegu, and to foster a social atmosphere of solidarity with neighbors during difficult times.
The 'Kidari Sharing Store' is operated with 350 million KRW in donations from the Daegu Community Chest of Korea. Daegu City, food banks, food markets, and welfare centers collaborate, with volunteers from the Daegu Red Cross also participating.
Through this, approximately 11,000 households facing temporary livelihood crises due to COVID-19 will receive food and daily necessities worth about 30,000 KRW per household.
The operation period is from the 9th until the donations are exhausted in November. There are a total of 11 locations: 8 food markets, 2 food banks (Dong-gu and Suseong-gu), and 1 welfare center (Seo-gu).
Any citizen struggling with their livelihood can receive a voucher after confirming eligibility for social welfare services and discovering and linking welfare blind spots through welfare counseling at their local eup, myeon, or dong administrative welfare center.
Daegu Mayor Kwon Young-jin said, "I hope citizens who suddenly face crises due to COVID-19 can spend a warm Lunar New Year holiday," and added, "We will do our best to discover and support households in crisis and ensure that no citizen suffers from hunger or falls into welfare blind spots."
