[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Junhee) is recruiting urban farmers to cultivate eco-friendly urban gardens, which serve as safe agricultural product producers and spaces for communication and sharing among neighbors and generations.
The gardens available for lease this time include ▲Gang Gamchan Garden ▲Nakseongdae Garden ▲Seorim-dong 1 and 2 Gardens ▲Cheongryongsan Garden ▲Chunghyo Garden ▲Samsung-dong Gwanak Urban Agriculture Park, totaling 1,028 plots (approximately 10㎡ per plot).
Residents of Gwanak-gu or facilities and organizations located in Gwanak-gu can apply, with only one plot per applicant allowed. Successful applicants can cultivate from the end of March to November, with a lease fee of 55,000 KRW for individuals and free for organizations.
Applications can be submitted from the 23rd to the 25th via the Gwanak-gu Office website (Participation/Reservation → Participation Application → Administrative Reception). Seniors aged 65 or older who have difficulty using the internet can apply in person at the Gwanak Urban Agriculture Park (140 Gwangsin-gil).
Winners will be selected through a random computerized draw on March 4th, announced on the district office website on March 5th, and notified individually via text message.
Successful applicants will receive compost and hoes free of charge once initially, and agricultural water, watering cans, shovels, rakes, and other farming tools necessary for cultivation are always provided and available at the garden.
Now in its sixth year, the Gwanak urban garden operates as an eco-friendly garden using the ‘3-No Farming Method’ without chemical pesticides, chemical fertilizers, or chemical materials, aiming to preserve the environment while producing safe agricultural products through eco-friendly urban agriculture.
Meanwhile, in May this year, the ‘Gang Gamchan Urban Agriculture Center (253-8 Bongcheon-dong)’ near the Gang Gamchan Garden is scheduled to open.
The Gang Gamchan Urban Agriculture Center is a 1,223㎡ multi-purpose space equipped with facilities such as exhibition greenhouses (Fruit Farm, Berry Farm, Kitchen Farm, Barrier-Free Garden), experience rooms, seed exhibition halls, multi-purpose classrooms, and a book caf?. It is expected to be a healing space where not only urban garden leaseholders but anyone can experience various garden cultures.
Mayor Park Junhee said, “I hope this will be an opportunity to create a space for communication among neighbors and families through eco-friendly urban garden cultivation and experiences in the city, and it is also expected to help overcome depression caused by COVID-19,” adding, “We ask for the active participation and interest of all residents.”
