Pohang City Holds Groundbreaking Ceremony for 'Saemaeul Hall' in Munseong-ri, Birthplace of the Saemaeul Movement
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongwook Park] On the 5th, Pohang City held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Saemaeul Hall and an unveiling ceremony for the 50th anniversary monument of the Saemaeul Movement
Considering the COVID-19 situation, only a minimal number of attendees participated in the groundbreaking ceremony, including Mayor Lee Kang-deok, Pohang City Council Chairman Jeong Hae-jong, and Saemaeul Association officials.
The event proceeded with the presentation of a plaque of appreciation to Choi Hyun-wook, the Saemaeul Association president who contributed to the development of Pohang City's Saemaeul Association over a long period, the awarding of merit plaques to contributors such as Kim Su-geun, the first president who contributed to the 50-year history of the Saemaeul Movement in Pohang, followed by the groundbreaking and unveiling performances.
Mayor Lee Kang-deok of Pohang emphasized in his commemorative speech, "Munseong-ri, Gigae-myeon is a meaningful place where the Saemaeul Movement originated, and by constructing the Saemaeul Hall at this significant site, it will become the foundation for a more advanced Saemaeul Movement."

The Pohang Saemaeul Hall, decided to be promoted in 2017, is being built on a 1,020㎡ site with a total budget of 1.2 billion KRW, including 300 million KRW from the provincial government and 900 million KRW from the city government. The completion date is scheduled for the end of August.
