[Asia Economy Reporter Ryu Jeong-min] President Moon Jae-in stated in his video congratulatory speech at the 'National Artificial Intelligence Data Center Investment Agreement and Groundbreaking Ceremony' on the 4th, "Today, Gwangju, a city of coexistence and culture, takes the first step into the human-centered artificial intelligence era," adding, "The ‘National Artificial Intelligence Convergence Complex’ to be located in Gwangju Advanced District 3 will house infrastructure for startups, research, talent development, and a world-class artificial intelligence data center."
President Moon expressed his expectation, saying, "It will become a forward base realizing South Korea’s dream to leap beyond an information and communication powerhouse to an artificial intelligence powerhouse in the post-COVID-19 era, serving as the core hub of artificial intelligence in South Korea."
President Moon evaluated, "Gwangju was the first to create regional win-win jobs based on democracy and the May spirit through labor-management harmony. The regional win-win jobs initiated by Gwangju are spreading nationwide, and now Gwangju is leading again with artificial intelligence."
President Moon explained, "We will invest 620 billion won over the next four years for the ‘National Artificial Intelligence Convergence Complex’ and create about 1,200 jobs. NHN will invest 210 billion won and directly operate the national artificial intelligence data center, which will process data at speeds more than three times faster than the country’s best supercomputer and store over 100 million movies."
President Moon said, "Universities in Gwangju and Jeonnam, including Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, are already becoming cradles for nurturing artificial intelligence talent," adding, "Young AI talents trained in Gwangju will challenge the global market and develop Gwangju into a world-class AI startup city."
President Moon foresaw, "The Gwangju industrial complex, designated as a free economic zone, is also equipped to attract global companies. Based on optical industries such as LED and sensors, it has sufficient capacity to innovate the automobile, energy, and healthcare industries through artificial intelligence," and added, "Gwangju will lead the AI-first nation Korea together with representative AI companies."
President Moon pledged, "The government will spread the enthusiasm for artificial intelligence to regions and the private sector so that Gwangju’s dream, like regional win-win jobs, reaches more regions and more young people," and said, "We will promote ‘AI regional hubs’ combining regional representative industries and AI, actively support regional balanced New Deal through AI technology, and reduce disparities between the metropolitan area and regions, as well as between urban and rural areas."
