Remodeling of Old Yeongdeungpo Industrial Mission Building to Establish Workers' Comprehensive Support Center... Design Service Completed in November Last Year, Construction Started in February, Scheduled for Completion by May... Labor History Museum and Training Center to Be Established... Systematic Welfare Projects for Vulnerable Workers Planned
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yeongdeungpo-gu (Mayor Chae Hyun-il) announced that following the completion of the design service for the renovation of the Yeongdeungpo-gu Workers' Comprehensive Support Center in November 2020, construction will begin in February.
Yeongdeungpo-gu ranks 5th among Seoul's autonomous districts with 42,589 registered businesses (based on the '2018 Business Statistics Data'). Among these, small businesses account for 90%, and vulnerable workers make up a large proportion of the workforce.
Accordingly, the district plans to complete the Workers' Comprehensive Support Center, which will begin construction in February this year, by May. The center will serve as a control tower to promote systematic and comprehensive welfare projects for vulnerable workers.
Specifically, the center will be responsible for ▲ labor environment improvement projects such as free labor law consultations and labor-management relations consulting, as well as labor-related legal education ▲ customized labor education such as labor rights sensitivity training ▲ cultural and leisure activity support projects for workers ▲ investigating and researching district labor policies to implement systematic labor policies that meet the improvement needs of local workers.
The new Workers' Comprehensive Support Center, to be established in the Yeongdeungpo Industrial Mission building, will be conveniently located with excellent accessibility, about a 10-minute walk from Dangsan Station on Lines 2 and 9 and Yeongdeungpo Market Station on Line 5.
The Yeongdeungpo Industrial Mission has played a central role in the labor mission movement during the 1960s and 70s when industrialization was in full swing, and it was recognized for its historical significance and symbolism by being designated as a Seoul Future Heritage site.
Establishing the Workers' Comprehensive Support Center for workers at this site is historically very meaningful.
The total area of the center will be 408.27㎡, with the basement level 1 operating as a labor history museum, and the three above-ground floors serving as multipurpose complex spaces such as classrooms and counseling rooms. The fourth floor will house offices, counseling rooms, and a book cafe.
