Affordable Phone Plans with Added Donations... Attracted 5,000 Subscribers in 4 Months
LG Uplus, 'Hope Windmill Donation Plan'
10% of Monthly Basic Fee Donated
[Asia Economy Reporter Minyoung Cha] LG Uplus announced on the 28th that the number of subscribers to the ‘Hope Windmill Donation Plan’, launched in October last year, has surpassed 5,000.
The Hope Windmill Donation Plan is a rate plan launched for customers using MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) services. For up to one year, 10% of the subscriber's monthly basic fee is automatically donated to the Korean Red Cross. Donations are made under the subscriber's name, and donation receipts can be issued for year-end tax deductions. The entire cost corresponding to the donation amount is borne by LG Uplus.
In addition to the donation benefits, subscribers can use MVNO communication services at an affordable cost. The monthly basic fee is 33,000 KRW (including VAT), which allows for 11GB of data and voice calls and text messages. After all data is used up, data can continue to be used at a speed of 3Mbps.
Analysis of the donation plan subscribers showed a high proportion of people in their 20s. While the proportion of people in their 20s is less than 30% for general MVNO plans, about 40% of subscribers to the Hope Windmill Donation Plan are in their 20s. It is analyzed that the unique advantage of this plan, which allows affordable communication service use along with donations, meets the needs of the younger generation.
Mr. Ikho Jo (32), who subscribed to the Hope Windmill Donation Plan last year, said, “The biggest merit of the plan is that part of the communication fee can be donated and that MVNO can be used at a reasonable price,” adding, “Social interest in donations was a good opportunity to choose this plan.”
The donations collected through the Hope Windmill Donation Plan are estimated to be about 180 million KRW. The collected funds will be used to support households in welfare blind spots and marginalized groups through the Korean Red Cross.
Song Kyu-young, head of the Social Cooperation Team at the Korean Red Cross, said, “We are pleased that the donation plan in collaboration with U+ MVNO has helped spread the donation culture and activate MVNO services,” adding, “We will continue to strive to expand the donation culture.”
