Lee Jae-myung: "We will expand basic housing to ensure tenants are not displaced"
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Lee Jae-myung, Governor of Gyeonggi Province, announced that he will continuously expand the supply of the 'Gyeonggi Province-type Basic Housing' to guarantee the people's right to housing.
He also requested the government to improve systems such as the Special Act on Public Housing necessary for the supply of basic housing and to enhance financial support for flexible funding.
On the 26th, Governor Lee stated on Facebook, "In our country, housing has become a means of speculation for buying and selling rather than a place to live," and pointed out the unfortunate reality, saying, "As speculation overheats, fear-driven demand has increased, with people gathering all their soul to buy a house, fearing they will spend their entire lives moving from one rented home to another."
He continued, "Most of the disposable income of the people is tied up in repaying housing loans, reducing consumption power, lowering quality of life, and leading to economic stagnation," adding, "If the state guarantees the right to housing as a basic right of the people, at least they would not have to tremble with the fear of being homeless on the streets, and as a result, real estate speculation overheating and fear-driven demand would also subside."
He particularly emphasized, "President Moon Jae-in also said, 'We will prevent making money through real estate,'" and argued, "Restricting financial benefits for non-owner-occupied demand and recovering unearned income can suppress speculation."
Governor Lee further introduced, "Gyeonggi Province is promoting 'Basic Housing' so that anyone without a home can live in high-quality housing located in good locations."
Basic Housing includes a 'long-term rental type,' where residents can live for a long time by paying reasonable rent lower than the surrounding market price, and a 'land leasehold sale type,' where residents pay only land usage fees and must resell to the public when selling.
Gyeonggi Province's Basic Housing focuses on providing affordable and high-quality living environments while blocking speculation.
