Samsung Executive Lee Jae-yong's 'Prison Letter' to Employees... Second Message Since Detention (Comprehensive)
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyewon] Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong sent a letter from prison containing 'apologies, gratitude, and requests' to Samsung employees.
The letter, sent through his lawyer, was posted on the company bulletin board on the 26th by Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Kim Ki-nam and Presidents Kim Hyun-suk and Ko Dong-jin. This is the second message from Vice Chairman Lee since he was sentenced to 2 years and 6 months in prison and taken into custody in court following the retrial of the National Pension Service scandal on the 18th.
First, Vice Chairman Lee began his apology by saying, "I am very sorry to cause you worry again due to my shortcomings," and "I truly apologize for burdening you with such a heavy load."
He continued, "Samsung has faced many difficult circumstances both internally and externally over the past several years," and expressed gratitude by saying, "However, you have quietly worked and steadfastly protected Samsung." He also asked, "As you have done so far, please continue to unite with unwavering resolve," and added, "Regardless of my situation, Samsung must continue on the path it must take."
He further emphasized, "We must keep the promises already made to the public," and stated, "We must also fulfill the company's fundamental duties of investment and job creation. Furthermore, Samsung must be reborn as a company that fulfills its social responsibilities." This appears to be a request to focus on business without any leadership vacuum amid concerns that Samsung Electronics' management might be disrupted and large-scale investments might become difficult following Vice Chairman Lee's detention.
Vice Chairman Lee concluded by saying, "I will reflect on myself humbly and with greater self-restraint," and "I will make sure that this time is not wasted. Together with you, I will definitely create a new Samsung." On the day before the final deadline for re-appeal, both Vice Chairman Lee's side and the special prosecutor team led by Park Young-soo decided not to file a re-appeal, confirming the 2 years and 6 months prison sentence. Unless there is a special pardon or parole, Vice Chairman Lee is expected to be released in July next year upon completion of his sentence.
