Samsung Display Develops Smartphone OLED with 16% Reduced Power Consumption
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyewon] Samsung Display announced on the 26th that it has developed a 2021 model low-power organic light-emitting diode (OLED) for smartphones.
By successfully commercializing new OLED organic materials with improved luminous efficiency compared to previous models, they developed a smartphone OLED that can reduce power consumption by more than 16%. This panel was first applied to the Galaxy S21 Ultra recently unveiled by Samsung Electronics.
OLED expresses colors through organic light-emitting materials that emit light by themselves when current flows, without a separate light source. Therefore, the efficiency of organic materials affects the display's power consumption, wide color gamut, high brightness, and outdoor visibility.
The newly developed organic materials by Samsung Display significantly increased luminous efficiency by improving the electron mobility in the organic layer to be faster and easier. This means brighter light can be emitted with less energy, which can help improve smartphone usage time in the 5G era where video viewing is increasing.
To secure a super-gap competitiveness in the field of organic material technology, Samsung Display has focused its capabilities on enhancing material technology by closely cooperating with global material companies and expanding specialized personnel over the past 10 years. In the last three years, they have filed more than 370 OLED organic material-related patents annually in Korea, the United States, China, Japan, and Europe, and as of last year, they hold about 5,000 related patents cumulatively.
