Opening of the Nation's Top-Level 'Drive-In Theater' at Hampyeong Expo Park
Normal Operation from the 28th... Features of Online Advance Booking
[Hampyeong=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Hampyeong Expo Park, famous as the venue for the Butterfly Festival and the National Chrysanthemum Exhibition, now boasts a top-tier outdoor drive-in theater in the nation.
Especially from the second half of this year, tourism infrastructure projects such as Hampyeong Cheonjigil, zipline, and skywalk will be actively promoted, raising expectations that the county's ambitious '4·4·8 Tourism Project' will get on track early.
According to Hampyeong County on the 24th, Hampyeong Drive-in Theater will officially open with a ceremony on the 28th and begin full operation.
It is the third drive-in theater dedicated to automobiles in the Honam region (Gwangju, Jeonnam, Jeonbuk), following Gwangju and Yeosu.
The county has been promoting the Hampyeong Drive-in Theater project since last year to revitalize the local economy and improve residents' cultural welfare.
With a total project cost of about 900 million KRW, a new large screen (23m×15m) two-screen facility, concession stands, and ticket booths were constructed on a 11,000㎡ site in the Hwangso parking lot area of Hampyeong Expo Park.
The two-theater Hampyeong Drive-in Theater can accommodate a total of 180 vehicles, allowing them to watch two different movies simultaneously.
Each screening room was built as the Butterfly Hall and Golden Bat Hall, symbolizing local representative images. The Golden Bat Hall also features a rain shelter and a multipurpose stage (20m×12m), enabling various cultural and artistic events beyond movie screenings to be held regularly.
Advance reservations for Hampyeong Drive-in Theater are also available through the official website.
Among the drive-in theaters currently operating nationwide, only Hampyeong Drive-in Theater and CGV×CAR CINEMA Seoul Land branch (currently closed) offer online advance booking.
The county expects that once the online reservation system is firmly established, stable theater operations and increased tourism demand for adjacent attractions such as Hampyeong Expo Park will follow.
Additionally, leveraging the advantage of direct management, the county allows the use of Hampyeong Love Gift Certificates (including mobile gift certificates) for on-site payments.
The Hampyeong Love Gift Certificate offers a 10% discount at the time of purchase, and using it for payment effectively grants a 10% discount on the admission fee.
Hampyeong Drive-in Theater will be open for regular viewing from the opening day on the 28th (free admission on the day; advance booking available from the 29th).
The admission fee is 20,000 KRW per vehicle, with two daily screenings of the latest releases from 7 PM to midnight every day (closed regularly on Mondays).
However, since the drive-in theater was created for the cultural welfare of local residents, the county is considering waiving or discounting admission fees for residents, national veterans, and persons with disabilities.

Lee Sang-ik, Hampyeong County Governor, said, “We hope that the Hampyeong Drive-in Theater, built to the highest national standards, will revitalize the local economy and domestic cultural activities that have been subdued by COVID-19. Going forward, the county will do its best to actively link the drive-in theater with local tourism resources to create a year-round tourism destination in Hampyeong where visitors want to stay.”
