70s Haenyeo Missing at Sea off Seogwipo Found... Ultimately Passed Away
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters (Jeju) Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] Haenyeo A (73 years old, Seogwipo), who went missing in the sea near Oedolgae in Seogwipo on the 23rd, was found but ultimately passed away.
According to the Seogwipo Coast Guard on the 24th, the deceased haenyeo A was collecting conchs with about 20 other haenyeos near Oedolgae around 11 a.m. on the 23rd when the accident occurred.
The Coast Guard stated that other haenyeos who worked with A finished fishing around 4 p.m. and all came out of the water, but only A did not come out, so the head of the fishing village reported it to the Coast Guard.
Upon receiving the report, the Seogwipo Coast Guard deployed two patrol vessels, a rescue team, a coastal rescue boat from the police substation, and one government vessel to search the surrounding sea, while about 150 police officers, members of the Fisheries Cooperative, and fishing village residents searched on land.
A was found floating in the sea near Hwangwooji coast in Seogwipo around 7:40 a.m. on the 24th by an employee of the Seogwipo Fisheries Cooperative and was moved to land but ultimately passed away.
